A Very French Christmas: The Greatest French Holiday Stories of All Time

(short story collection) Release date: October 10, 2017 at New Vessel Press ISBN: 978-1939931504 142 pages Website Goodreads

A continuation of the very popular Very Christmas Series from New Vessel Press, this collection brings together the best French Christmas stories of all time in an elegant and vibrant collection featuring classics by Guy de Maupassant and Alphonse Daudet, plus stories by the esteemed twentieth century author Irène Némirovsky and contemporary writers Dominique Fabre and Jean-Philippe Blondel. With a holiday spirit conveyed through sparkling Paris streets, opulent feasts, wandering orphans, kindly monks, homesick soldiers, oysters, crayfish, ham, bonbons, flickering desire, and more than a little wine, this collection encapsulates the holiday spirit and proves that the French have mastered Christmas. This is Christmas à la française—delicious, intense and unexpected, proving that nobody does Christmas like the French.

4 stars

I really enjoyed reading A Very French Christmas by these various authors for a few reasons. One being that it's not something that I would normally pick up, so just it being different was a nice change for my reading habits. Second, it's whole focus is on a French Christmas. I feel like this is a nice little book that shows the differences in culture and tradition of a French Christmas toward, for me, an American Christmas. It was nice to read about French customs and how they celebrate Christmas.

I would definitely recommend this book if you like to read about other cultures, or if you are just interested in this collection. It was a decently quick read overall, but it's a collection, so you can also take your time enjoying each individual story if you want. I thought it was great and look forward to possibly reading the rest of the books in this collection.

Alphonse Daudet, Guy de Maupassant, Anatole France Irène Némirovsky, Jean-Philippe Blondel, Dominique Fabre, Paul Arene, Francois Coppee, Antoine Gustave Droz, Anatole La Braz

  1. Thanks for your nice review. Yes, I encourage you to read other books published by New Vessel Press, I have read several, and I was never disappointed, they do a phenomenal job at publishing literature in translation. Emma at France Book Tours

    1. Thank you for the opportunity to read the book!

  2. I can never get into Christmas stories during the summer, but I do like the idea of exploring how different cultures celebrate popular holidays.

    1. Usually it's hard to pick up books that are holiday themed when it's not that holiday. I feel like it was easier because I was reading this for a purpose, rather than only to read it for fun.
