Master and Commander meets Tamora Pierce in a seafaring adventure of duty, love, magic, and a princess’s quest to protect her kingdom on her own terms.

After a lifetime of training, seventeen-year-old Princess Nile Greysik, a lieutenant on the prestigious Ashing navy flagship, sails into battle with one vital mission—and fails.

Barred from the sea and facing a political marriage, Nile masquerades as a common sailor on the first ship she can find. With a cowardly captain, incompetent crew, and a cruel, too-handsome first officer intent on making her life a living hell, Nile must hide her identity while trying to turn the sorry frigate battleworthy. Worse, a terrifying and forbidden magic now tingles in Nile’s blood. If anyone catches wind of who Nile is or what she can do, her life is over.

But when disaster threatens the ship, Nile may have no choice but to unleash the truth that will curse her future.

AIR AND ASH is the thrilling first installment of the TIDES series. Recommended for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Tamora Pierce, and Naomi Novik.

4 stars

I am a huge fan of pirates in YA, but there isn't a lot of books out there like that so when I had the opportunity to read a YA pirate book, I jumped on it. This book lived up to expectations that I was hoping this book would have.

This book hooked me from the very first chapter, and I didn't put it down until I was finished reading it. It has a wonderful world that you can just get lost in while reading, along with some amazing and well-written characters that are relatable. Nile is a strong heroine throughout the story, and that's one of the reasons that I like her the most. She doesn't need rescuing, she's not whiny. She's everything that I like in a YA female character.

There was some romance in Air and Ash, and I thought it was great. I thought the relationship between Nile and Domenic was nice. Domenic was a character that I, initially, did not like, but after awhile he grew on me, and started to like him. I also loved Catsper. He was just funny, and overall another great character.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in fantasy or pirates, because this book would be perfect for you.
